Shalom Apartments

The name Shalom comes from a word meaning “peace” – a word rich in significance for both the Jewish and Christian faiths, with reference to harmony, integrity, well-being, and spiritual security in the totality of life and experience.

Built in 1970, the complex consist of 46 units, including one, two, and three bedroom apartments, located in five buildings on a city block of almost two acres in the very heart of Lynchburg’s Old Town area. The apartments are within easy walking distance of churches, schools, city bus transportation, and downtown shopping, and have an on-site laundry facility for the convenience of the residents.

The community was renovated with the award of Low Income Housing Tax Credits in 2013-2014. Renovations included central heat and air conditioning, new roofs, new flooring, new kitchen cabinets, new energy efficient kitchen appliances, dishwashers, new bathroom fixtures, new energy efficient windows, and new plumbing lines. Since it was an EarthCraft project, residents will enjoy energy savings with their utility bills.

Five new accessible units complying with Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) were configured. Three of these are one-bedroom units and two are two-bedroom units. These units have lower cabinets, accessible kitchen appliances, and bathrooms with roll-in showers. A new accessible on-site laundry is available for the residents living in the ADA units.

The Resident Services Coordinator offers programs for the residents to enjoy at the newly configured community room. Landscaping and a new playground completed the improvements, making the Shalom community one in which people live comfortably and call home.
